The way 3-4 years of social networks’ user-base is compared to the population of countries developed over hundreds of years, it’s no less than a hard to believe fact. No wonder why marketers and businesses (including me) wouldn’t monetize this surge. Without wasting any more moment, here are curated social media facts and how you can cash upon this growth.

Facebook

  1. 23% of Facebook users check their account at least 5 times a day.
  2. 4.2 billion people access social media sites via mobile devices with 189 million Facebook users being ‘mobile only’
  3. Despite privacy concerns, only 25% of Facebook users utilize privacy settings.
  4. People are spending 1 out of every 7 minutes on Facebook when online. Facebook users typically are spending 10.5 billion minutes (almost 20,000 years) on the social network. And, that’s excluding mobile devices.
  5. Facebook posts with less than 250 characters get 60% more engagement.
  6. The population on Facebook is growing faster than on earth.

  3. Users send out 58 million tweets per day, with 9,100 happening every second. However, there are 222 million Twitters who just watch other people’s tweets.
  4. Grandparents are the fastest-growing demographic on Twitter.

  2. Despite having a lower percentage of users than Facebook, Twitter, Google + and Pinterest, 2 new members join LinkedIn every second.
  3. 93% of B2B marketers find LinkedIn the most effective social network for B2B lead generation, and 77% say they have acquired a customer through LinkedIn.
  4. 95% of the companies who use social media for recruitment are using Linkedin.
  5. There are over 39 million students and recent college graduates on LinkedIn.
  • Unfortunately, these are idle linkedin pages just parked after creation. Some of them are even being used for spam. [Ref #1]

  • Great platform for counsellors, startups and trainers niches that target students and interns. Looks like the new generation is focusing on more professional showcase.

Google+

1. There are over 343 million active users on Google+
2. The +1 button is served 5 billion times per day
3. 67% of Google+ users are male
4. 60% of Google+ users login at least once a day.

Wait! The +1 button is served 5 billion times per day? Whoa! +1 seems to be more glamorous than “like” on Facebook. [Ref #2]

Pinterest

1. Food is the top category discussed on Pinterest at 57%
2. 80% of all Pinterest pins are actually repins.
3. 100,000 of Pinterest’s members are retailers

  • Makes it a great content redistribution method without even creating content and build a good follower base [Ref #2]
  • So, there is a good number of buyers as well? [Ref #3]

  1. According to one study, mothers with children under the age of 5 are the most active on social media.
  2. 91% of mobile Internet access is for social activities with 73% of smartphone owners accessing social networks through apps at least once per day.
